Back in the mid-seventies Bernard Channing was running a fibreglass business in Nottingham.
As a keen fisherman Bernard loved spending his spare time catching fish but had never kept as much as a goldfish!
On moving to a new house he inherited a small garden pond which he utilised to keep his live bait. One day when visiting one of his customers, who ran a pet shop, he was shown his stock of Singapore Koi. Bernard thought they were colourful; as the conversation continue the man invited him out of the shop and into his garden and showed him his pond where his Japanese Koi lived. The spectacle of colour and simplistic beauty blew Bernard’s mind and he was hooked.
Chris Tarrant Opened Japanese Water Gardens Sunday 21st March 1977 consisting of outdoor sales ponds, a tropical and Coldwater section.
Within three years it was one of the leading aquatic centres in the country.
